Guidelines for Choosing the Right Dog ToysSeveral factors should be well thought-out when you are choosing which dog toys to purchase. Price and manufacturers are only two of many things to consider, even when selecting dog toys that are made by signature and high-end labels.
Follow the following simple tips when choosing toys for your dog:
Selecting the ideal toys for your dog:
Of course you want your dog toys to be enjoyable and fun. But you must not forget to ensure the toys are durable and safe. You don’t want your dog to start choking if he accidentally chews off a small piece and swallows it. Toy safety should be a top priority. You must look at several factors in order to determine a dog toy’s safety and durability; factors such as the size of your dog, its activity level, and also you and your dog’s personal preference. Ask dog-owning friends or family members for tips. It is also a good idea to check with your vet to see what toys you should be buying for your dog.
Be cautious when choosing the toys:
Unfortunately, in many cases, the toys that dogs find the most fascinating are the ones that could create the greatest risk. Evaluate whether the dog toy could be dangerous for your dog by checking with an associate at the store and asking what the benefits of the toy are.
Determining the perfect size of toys for your dog: Do not buy dog toys that are small enough for the dog to accidentally swallow or could cause your dog to choke. On the other hand, do not pick toys that are too big and heavy for your dog, as it would not be able to enjoy the toy. The size of the toy should be in direct correlation with the size of your dog; small dog, small toy or large dog, large toy.
Check to be sure that no part of the toy can fall off or break: When shopping for toys for our children we always make sure the toy is "kid proof." The same thing applies for dog toys; watch out for toys that may have parts that are not "dog proof." Some examples of parts of a toy that a dog could chew or ingest are strings, eyes, and ribbons, among other thing. Avoid these toys.
Dog toys that are squeaky and soft are good for some dogs, but not all dogs:
Dogs that are fairly gentle can play well with toys that are soft and squeaky. But some dogs simply play rough and can easily tear these types of toys apart, leaving pieces for him/her to swallow - or just a mess for you to clean up. Again, your veterinarian could be helpful in choosing any squeaky or soft toys that would be good for your dog. Or you can also check with the store staff or surf the Internet for additional information on toys. Follow these simple guidelines and you’ll find many dog toys that your dog will love and that you can feel safe about.
