Are You Considering Purchasing Pet Dog Insurance?
Given the option most people would never even consider going without health insurance for their family. Does this then include your dog? Some people view dog medical insurance as a pointless expense. However pet health insurance can save you money and save you from being forced to make the difficult decision of the life of your dog or paying the bills (should a serious health issue arise).
Veterinary costs have skyrocketed in recent years. When you do not have pet dog insurance most veterinarians today make you pay for every visit at the time of the appointment whether it is a routine checkup or an emergency. This can mean thousands of dollars out of pocket unexpectedly so why not get some help?
Just like personal health insurance pet health insurance for your dog has annual premiums and a deductible. The premium price is dependant on the dog breed and type of policy. And you can usually get a discount if you have more than one animal. As with the premium the deductibles vary. For most pet dog insurance it tends to be around $100 a year. There are many policies to choose from based on your dog’s age as well as breed and lifestyle and any pre-existing conditions. Boy that sounds a lot like the variables that come into play for our dog health policies.
There are dog medical insurance plans available to please almost everyone. Some deluxe plans will cover most everything including:
- Annual checkups
- Vaccinations
- Spaying
- Neutering
- Any medications
- Any sickness and
- Accidents.
Others will cover only major sickness and accidents. And then there is also everything in between. So you must decide if you would like the pet dog insurance to cover everything and pay a higher premium or if you would like a lower premium. The lower premium policy would mean you would handle the yearly costs of a well dog but have something available in case your dog becomes injured or sick. Getting a new dog medical insurance policy is similar to getting one for yourself - emergency coverage begins as soon as you sign up with your first payment and there is a 30-day waiting period for illness and other routine claims.
When considering dog health insurance be aware that his/her age will affect the coverage. Most policies cover the dog starting at 6 weeks of age. On the other end you may not be able to get coverage for your dog if he is more than 8 years old. Once your dog is covered however he will be able to retain coverage past 8 years of age.
As a dog owner you should seriously consider getting dog health insurance. Think of it as a normal expense for having pet. It is well worth it and it can really ease your mind knowing that should your dog need expensive medical treatment to save his life - he’ll be covered.
